Craig’s mom (Heide, in the middle) and aunt (Gretel, on the right) visited us Saturday afternoon and evening. We had a lovely time catching up with them over a pot of chef Craig’s yummy chicken soup. As always, we commented, “We should do this more often.” They only live in Northern Virginia, which, as foreign as it seems (in more ways than one), is not that far away.
And yes, Heide and Gretel are German, if you couldn’t tell from their names. (Or if you couldn’t tell that Craig is German from our last name – and that’s from his dad’s side!) They were born and raised in Germany, and came to the US as adults. Craig’s parents met in Germany when his dad was stationed there in the late 60s. Back when we first started dating, Heide, Gretel, and Oma Helms back in Germany were quite tickled that I took four years of German in high school and made it to the 300 level in college. Unfortunately, I have only retained ein bisschen of the language.
